I am hosting an in-person 1 day workshop in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada on Saturday, August 9th, 2025. If you have ever wanted to come and learn some surface design techniques from me, this is a great opportunity to do so. We will look at various processes for developing rich surfaces on clay forms. I will discuss several methods of layering pattern and imagery on greenware to develop ideas and create personal expression.

Although substantial time will be devoted to demonstration and discussion, there will also be time to try some of the techniques covered. Participants should bring 10-12 tiles or simple pieces to work on. Half should be bone dry and half should be at the soft leather hard stage. If you are travelling, tiles work very well for transport. *Please note, we will not be bisque or glaze firing any work made during this workshop. Participants should plan to take the unfired tiles or pieces away with them and fire them at their own home or community studio. Please also bring a sketchbook or notebook so you can take notes and record your ideas. Bring your favourite tools to carve lines into clay, any underglaze colours you want to work with, and a variety of paintbrushes.

This workshop will take place at the Contour Studio in the Red Deer Recreation Centre. You are welcome to bring a lunch or to eat at any of the restaurants or coffee shops in the area. We will begin at 10:00am and end at 5:00pm. I will send out an email two weeks ahead of time with more details.

Cancelation Policy: A full refund will be given if you need to cancel any time before July 25th. If you need to cancel on or after that date, I will endeavor to fill your slot and if I’m successful, I will refund your fee. If, unfortunately I can’t fill your space, please understand that I will not be able to issue a refund.
